Improving Transplant Care by Understanding Caregiver Needs

By focusing on the caregivers who support lung transplant patients after surgery, University of Windsor nursing research is helping broaden how transplant care is understood and delivered. The study looks at the experiences of family members and friends who provide essential support throughout the recovery process.

With a first-of-its-kind cross-border approach, this research examines caregiver experiences in Ontario and Michigan. Using surveys and in-depth interviews, the study will gather insights into both the positive and challenging aspects of caregiving, while involving students in research, presentation and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

By better understanding the needs of caregivers, this work can help inform more comprehensive approaches to transplant care, ones that support not only patients but also the people who help them recover. The research aims to contribute to stronger care planning, improved family supports and better outcomes for transplant patients and their caregivers.
