Supporting regional health care through student-led start-ups

Medical students across the province played a vital role in supporting frontline staff and members of the local community through outreach activities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To help strengthen the reach and impact of student-led initiatives and address pressing health-care challenges in southwestern Ontario, a team of medical students founded Accel Labs – a social entrepreneurship incubator that provides student-led projects with the support they need to make their health-care startup a reality.

The Accel Labs team accepts projects that consider the social determinants of health and create unique solutions to problems affecting underrepresented, marginalized and socio-economically disadvantaged groups. To get started, projects receive $1,000 in seed funding, access to tailored workshops focused on professional skills development, such as fundraising and online promotion, and personalized mentorship from a Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry faculty member with expertise in the areas the project addresses.
