With a goal to help grow Ottawa’s life sciences sector and foster an ecosystem of industry research and development, the University of Ottawa is opening the Advanced Medical Research Centre (AMRC) — a facility designed to unite university, clinical, government and industry researchers as they work to accelerate life sciences breakthroughs in health innovation and biotech commercialization.
As one of the largest facilities in the province dedicated to research, innovation and commercialization in the life sciences sector, AMRC will bring the research, incubation and acceleration stages together with the private sector. It will feature open-concept wet labs with access to core research facilities, a Health Innovation Hub to nurture biotech startups and drive commercialization, and offer direct connections to nearby hospitals for real-time clinical collaboration.
Focused on enabling the discovery of life-saving therapies as well as incubating and scaling up the next generation of biotech companies, the Health Innovation Hub will be a space where researchers, health care professionals and industry experts can meet and collaborate to drive continuous progress and inspire creativity and innovation in health research.
With a shortage of research and wet-lab facilities in Eastern Ontario that has impeded the region’s ability to attract and retain top global talent in health innovation, it is predicted that by 2030, the AMRC will contribute $1.1 billion to Ontario’s economy, create over 1,300 jobs and support 650 researchers, ready to help provide quality health care for tomorrow.
